Preserving Family Memories with Custom Ceramic Tiles
by Linda Dahr
Description: Idea for preserving family memories with ceramic tiles.
Grandma was born in 1892, in the days when home baked cookies were the norm, butter was a staple in every kitchen, and people cared enough to share their home baked goods with one another on a regular basis. I remember awaking to the smell of Grandma's Sugar Biscuits … that was her "specialty." It was a soft sugar cookie that smelled like heaven when it was baking and could draw me out of bed and right to the kitchen so I could devour one of Grandma's warm Sugar Biscuits with a cup of chocolate milk.
Today, when I look at Grandma's old recipe book my heart fills with memories. Grandma was a major part of my life growing up. Having a close connection with someone dating back to the 1800's was an enlightening experience. The stories Grandma shared with me were a striking contrast to life as I knew it.
Grandma left me a legacy … the memories she shared with me over the years, her hand written recipe book, pictures of her life and her family, dishes and glassware from her mother and grandmother. But nothing is more precious to me than Grandma's handwritten recipe book. She started writing recipes in her book in 1910. Today … almost 100 years later, after years of wear and use, the handwritten pages of her book are starting to disintegrate.
Preserving memories and precious family history such as this is important for future generations. Preserve your family's legacy in unique ways. Create a special scrapbook of family heirlooms and family history. Let your children be a part of creating this family scrapbook … after all, this is part of their heritage. Do you have hand written notes, recipes, newspaper articles about a family member? Create a family tree with your children, listing generations as far back as you can remember. As you're putting the tree together with family members names … share a memory or story about each person.
I decided to do a little something different with Grandma's Sugar Biscuit recipe. I wanted to do a little more than just preserve the memory … I wanted to share Grandma with others. So I scanned the recipe, as well as a photo of Grandma from her younger days, and created a customized ceramic Tile that I can use as a wall hanging or, with a wood frame, as a tile trivet. It's a unique way to "share" Grandma and her favorite recipe!
If you have family treasures like these … preserve and protect them so that your family heritage can live on for generations to come.
