Custom Christmas Stockings
by Mary Wilkins - sewwhatsnew@hfx.eastlink.ca

These stockings are so easy to make and once you start with your ideas, you can't stop. They are totally addictive. The ones we have made really show character and personality.

You don't need lavish fabrics, a fancy machine or even a special foot, just some imagination and scraps can go a long way.

1. Trace out your stocking shape from an existing one you have.

2. Change the toe shape, or add a heel as on a shoe. Perhaps put a pocket on the front for candy canes or a cuff to embellish.

3. Once you have decided on your shape, cut out the front and back.

4. Cut out 2 lining pieces the same shape and size.

5. Embellish front and cuff with ribbon, lace, trim or bells. Whatever you have on hand.

6. Sew front to back right sides together. Trim and clip curves carefully. This is what brings out the character of your stocking - the unique shape.

7. Turn right side out.

8. Sew lining pieces right sides together, trim and clip curves.

9. Place lining inside stocking shell.

10. Sew strip of 1" wide fabric on outside along top edge using 1/4" seam. Turn to inside and stitch down. Add loop to hang.

These were so much fun to make. Here are a few more ideas for people on your list.

A man's stocking could be made in the shape of a work boot or sewn from plaid flannel with a pocket on the front. Use an old shirt.

A gardener's stocking could be made from burlap.

An executive's stocking could be made from striped shirting with a tie in front.

What about one in the shape of roller blades?

The possibilities are endless. Have fun!
