Preschoolers can make their Christmas gifts extra-special by designing unique wrapping paper for them.
Here are the instructions to make three kinds of wrapping paper. How many more kinds can you and your preschooler think of?
For each type of wrapping paper, you’ll need:
- Old newspapers
- Sheets of tissue paper (white or your child’s favorite color)
- Acrylic paints
- An old pie tin or plate
- A cup of water for rinsing
Evergreen Wrapping Paper
To make evergreen wrapping paper, you will also need:
- Evergreen sprigs
- A large, soft paintbrush
What you do:
1. Protect your work area with newspapers.
2. Spread a single sheet of tissue paper over the newspaper.
3. Squeeze some paint into the pie tin or plate
4. Dip the paintbrush into the paint and cover the surface of the sprig with paint
5. Place the sprig on the tissue paper, with the painted side down. Hold down the sprig securely.
6. Lay a piece of newspaper over the sprig. Press down on the sprig through the newspaper.
7. Remove the newspaper and the sprig. You can repaint the sprig to use it again, but use a clean sheet of newspaper for each print you make.
8. Try using different colors and designs. Rinse and dry the spring between colors.
9. Allow the tissue to dry for at least an hour before using it to wrap Christmas presents.
Beautiful Flower Wrapping Paper

- A celery bunch

2. Spread a single sheet of tissue paper over the newspaper.
3. Squeeze some paint into the pie tin or plate
4. Cut off the bottom of a celery bunch
5. With the paintbrush, cover the bottom of the celery stalk with paint.
6. Stamp the celery on the tissue paper to create beautiful flowered paper.
7. To change colors, wash off the celery and dry between colors.
8. Allow the tissue to dry for at least an hour before using it to wrap Christmas presents.
Happy Handprint Wrapping Paper
For Happy Handprint Paper, use a separate dish for each color of paint you want to use. Prepare them before you begin your project. Once you begin, your hands will too busy to prepare paint!
