Homemade Snow Globes

Description: Homemade snow globes are a fun holiday craft to make with your kids.

Everyone loves snow globes with their magical scenes. There are globes for every taste and budget on the market. And, at the Christmas holidays, they seem to be everywhere! But, have you considered making your own? It’s really quite easy and inexpensive.

Jar with lid
Figurine of choice (make sure it will fit on the inside of the lid)
Epoxy glue
Distilled water
Glitter
Ribbons, fabric or other items for decoration

Remove the lid form the jar. Place a layer of the glue on the bottom of the figurine and place it on the inside of the lid. Hold in place for five minutes or until dry. Fill jar with the distilled water. Be sure to use distilled as it is less likely to cloud and be a breeding ground for mold and such. Don’t fill completely full as the figurine will take up some space. Add the glitter of your choice to the jar. There are colors to match any season and any theme, even some that resembles snow.

Using a toothpick, run a little glue around the inside of the jar lid. Carefully place the lid on the jar and tighten. Decorate the lid, which is now the bottom of the globe, in any way you choose. Use ribbon, fabric, lace, cord, paint or string. Glue some smaller figurines around the bottom and add some to the top if you like.

A little history on snow globes: Snow globes are thought to first have appeared in France in the 1800’s and were a part of upper class Victorian décor. Globes were made of heavy leaded glass with cast iron or ceramic bases. The figurines inside were ceramic and the “snow” consisted of anything from bone chips to ceramic chips to sawdust! As time wore on, the glass became thinner and the snow was made of soap chips or gold foil. Most snow in the globes seen nowadays is made of plastic chips.

They were very popular in Europe before crossing the Atlantic to the United States in the 1920’s. In the 1940’s, they became popular advertising tools and by the 1950’s, the first plastic globes appeared. In modern times snow globes are widely available and are often considered a collector’s item.

Snow globes have come a long way since their early inception. While it is, of course, fun to collect the store bought variety, it is equally as fun to make your own!
