Soap on a rope has many fun uses. It's great on those summer camping trips since it keeps your soap out of the dirt. It's also great at home since hanging soap prevents those slimy soap dishes, and when you drop it in the tub - it's easy to find!
So how do you make soap on a rope? If you are familiar with soap making, you can use your favorite recipe. You will also need about 18 inches of rope.
If you aren't experienced at soap making, the easiest way is to use melt and pour soap, adding fragrance if you like. If you have a double sided soap mold, snap it together and then push the ends of your rope down into the hole so the rope is about halfway into the mold and secure the whole thing with rubber bands. Pour your soap into the hole to fill the mold, and over fill slightly as the rope will absorb some of the soap.
If you will be using a single sided mold, begin your soap making as usual, filling your mold about half full. Let the soap set up for a few minutes so it forms a film, then lay the ends of your rope on top of the soft soap, positioning them to be about half way into the finished soap. Pour the rest of you soap on top to fill the mold, making sure the rope doesn't float.
Put your finished product somewhere it won't be disturbed. Let it harden as you normally would or as your recipe directs. Remove it from your mold, and you have soap on a rope!
You don't have to have a mold to make soap on a rope. You can create soap flakes by grating a bar of soap (by hand or with a food processor) and adding water to form a dough. (For 3 cups of soap flakes it will take 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water.) Knead this mixture with your hands.
Tie a knot in the end of your rope to hold both ends together. Coat your hands with a few drops of vegetable oil, and form a ball out of your soap dough. Push the knotted end of the rope into the center of your ball of soap.
You can shape your ball of soap dough using your hands to create different shapes. Set your completed soap where it can dry undisturbed for at least 8 hours until it is completely hardened. You now have your own soap on a rope creation!
